Clinical Associate Professor Hairul Ahmad

MB BS, FACEM (1999), FRACS, MS

Hairul has a strong interest in hernia repair, especially in minimal invasive (‘keyhole’) repair of complex hernias. 

He has gained specialised hernia surgery experience in North Carolina, USA; Madrid, Spain and Melbourne.

Hairul is an Australian registered specialist in General Surgery – with the Royal Australasian College of Surgeons (RACS), with sub-specialty training in Upper Gastrointestinal and Hepatobiliary Surgery.

He is also a registered Endoscopist (diagnostic and therapeutic) with the Gastroenterology Society of Australia (GESA). He has also completed a fellowship in Emergency Medicine – with the Australasian College for Emergency Medicine (FACEM).

Hairul is intensively involved with surgical education in The Faculty of Medicine and Health Sciences at The University of Western Australia (UWA) as a Clinical Senior Lecturer. He holds a post graduate degree of Master of Surgery. His specific interest is the role of surgical simulation in surgical education.

Our Staff

Both the Waikiki and Nedlands centres are geared towards optimising the management of patients. The secretaries are experienced in the requirements of hernia patients and able to smooth the management from consultation to postoperative follow-up. Dedicated nurses will provide support for patients upon discharge and provide a point of contact for patient.

Appropriate patients will also be referred to dedicated chronic pain specialist, physiotherapists and rehabilitation. Prehabilitation optimisation will be undertaken with the assistance of a nutritionist and appropriate medical specialists.

 

Teaching and Research

Teaching

Clinical Associate Professor Ahmad has been extensively involved in teaching at local, state and national levels. 
He is a Senior Clinical Lecturer with the School of Surgery at The University of Western Australia (UWA) and is involved in teaching Junior Doctors and Trainee Surgeons. He has designed, convened and instructed in a number of laparoscopic courses at the university.

Mr Ahmad has instructed in a number of courses at state, national and international levels. He is a Senior Instructor for the course Emergency Management of Severe Trauma (EMST) run by the Royal Australasian College of Surgeons, as well as being instructor in a number of other courses. 

Recently Mr Ahmad was invited to instruct in a laparoscopic course in Jakarta, Indonesia.

As part of his teaching commitment, Mr Ahmad acts as a mentor for a number of medical students from UWA. His practice is also involved in providing ward and operative room experience to final year medical students from UWA.

Research

Mr Ahmad has published a number of studies in various international medical journals. 
This includes studies on minimal invasive techniques to treat pancreatic and stomach conditions.

He holds a Master of Surgery degree. His research combines his interest in surgical education and minimal invasive surgery. His thesis looked at the effectiveness and role of laparoscopic courses in teaching laparoscopy to junior doctors.
